Levels, XP and badges

This page is for admins. Members earn XP for chatting and for time in voice channels, level up, earn roles and badges, and see where they stand on a leaderboard. By the end you'll have it switched on and tuned to your server. Members have their own page: Your profile, levels and badges.

Turn it on

Levels are off until you switch them on. Run /setup leveling, or open Leveling in the dashboard. The recommended setup turns levels on at a calm pace and creates a #level-ups channel.

/level config shows all your settings in one place.

How XP works by default

A member earns 15 to 30 XP per message, at most once every 45 seconds, for messages of 5 or more characters. Each level takes a little more than the last: level 1 needs 100 XP, level 5 about 1,000 in total and level 10 about 4,000.

Members get a rank title as they go up: Novice, Apprentice (level 5), Adept (10), Expert (20), Master (35), Grandmaster (50) and Legend (75). You can rename them.

To change the basics, use the Leveling page or these commands: /level xp, /level cooldown, /level message-length, /level announce and /level announce-channel.

Rewards and fine-tuning

You want toUse
Give a role at a level/level reward-add, /level reward-remove, /level reward-list
Keep only the highest reward role/xp reward-mode mode:replace (the default, stack, keeps them all)
Give a role to people who already qualify/xp backfill
Stop XP in a channel or for a role/xp ignore-channel, /xp ignore-role (see everything with /xp ignored)
Run a double-XP weekend/xp multiplier value:2 hours:48 (it ends by itself)
Give boosters more XP/xp booster-bonus value:1.5
Rename a rank title/xp rank-title level:10 title:Regular (and /xp rank-title-reset)
Fix a member's level or XP/level admin-set, /level admin-reset

Multipliers go from 0.1 to 5. Messages in ignored channels still count toward a member's message total, they just earn no XP. All of this is also on the Leveling page, which has checklists for ignored channels and roles.

XP for voice

Set /xp voice-xp amount:5 to give 5 XP for each minute in a voice channel. It's off by default (0), and it's meant to reward real conversation, so it only counts when:

  • at least two people (not bots) are in the channel,
  • the member isn't deafened,
  • the channel isn't the AFK channel or one you've ignored.

Events and the booster bonus apply to voice XP too. Level-up announcements for voice need an announcement channel (/level announce-channel), because voice has no chat to reply in.

Leaderboards

Members see /level leaderboard. For a contest, period:week ranks XP earned since Monday and period:month ranks this calendar month. Both reset on their own. The Leveling page in the dashboard shows the leaderboard too.

Show it on the website

On the Leveling page, switch on Show the leaderboard on the website. It then lives at kaveh.shidoki.pt/s/ followed by your server's ID (the page shows the exact address). Anyone with the link can see members' names, avatars, levels and XP, with tabs for all time, this week and this month. Members can leave the list at any time with /profile leaderboard or on their own page, and their rank is counted among the people who are listed. It stays off until you switch it on, and it disappears if you switch the levels module off.

Global ranks

Members can opt in to the global ranks, which rank them across servers. Your server counts once it has at least ten active members. To leave it out, switch off Count this server in the global ranks on the Leveling page.

Badges

Badges are small awards shown on a member's profile. Each server has its own set. Start with the ready-made one:

text
/badge starter

It adds badges for levels (Rising, Seasoned, Veteran, Legend), messages (Chatterbox, Regular), voice time, reputation, boosting, time in the server and daily streaks (Dedicated for 7 days, Unstoppable for 30). Members earn them automatically, and the level-up channel mentions it when someone earns one.

You can make your own on the Badges page of the dashboard or with /badge create. A badge is earned by a rule:

RuleA member earns it by
levelreaching a level
messagessending that many messages
voice_hoursspending that many hours in voice
reputationreceiving that much reputation
boosterboosting the server
anniversary_daysbeing in the server that many days
streak_daysearning XP on that many days in a row (the best streak counts, so a badge is never lost)
manualbeing given it by staff
You want toUseWho
See every badge and how to earn it/badge listanyone
Give or take away a badge/badge grant, /badge revokemoderators
Create or delete badges/badge create, /badge deleteadmins

A server can have up to 60 badges. A badge you revoke is not handed back by its rule, and deleting a badge removes it from everyone who has it.

Members' titles

Members can set a short title on their own card. If one isn't appropriate, moderators can remove it with /profile title-clear or on the Badges page under Members.
