Frequently asked questions

Short answers, with links when there's more to say.

The basics

What is Kaveh?

A Discord bot for moderation, modmail, music, chat, levels and community tools, with a web dashboard for settings.

Is it free?

Yes. Kaveh is made and run by one developer, and there's no paid tier. Add it to a server you manage with the invite link.

Who can set it up?

Anyone with Manage Server (or Administrator), plus anyone with the admin role chosen during setup. Moderator commands need the moderator role. The guided setup (/setup run) needs the owner or the Administrator permission, because it can create an admin role.

How do I use Kaveh's commands?

Every command is a slash command: type / and pick one, or use /help to browse. The old k$ text commands have been removed, so there is nothing to type a prefix for.

Where do I get help?

Join the support server or read Getting help. Say which command you ran and what happened.

Privacy

What does Kaveh store about me?

It depends on which features your server uses and whether you talk to Kaveh. The Privacy Policy lists everything and how long it's kept. /privacy info gives you the short version in Discord.

Can I see or delete my data?

Yes. /privacy export sends you a copy and /privacy delete erases your personal data everywhere Kaveh is. Records a server's staff keep about their own server (moderation cases, modmail, suggestions) belong to that server, so ask its moderators about those.

Why does Kaveh ask for the Message Content and Server Members intents?

Discord calls these "privileged intents". Kaveh uses them for specific features and nothing else. See Permissions and intents.

What happens to my server's data if I remove Kaveh?

It's kept for 30 days in case you add Kaveh back, then deleted. That includes modmail conversations, transcripts and uploaded files.

Moderation

Does automod punish people straight away?

No. Breaking a rule deletes the message and adds strike points. Timeouts, kicks and bans happen when the points reach your limits (3, 5 and 7 by default), and strikes expire after 30 days. See Moderation.

Why did automod delete a normal message?

Check your Mod Actions log. The reason names the rule. The usual causes are a blocked term inside a longer word, a link while link blocking is on, or a quick burst of messages (more than 6 in 10 seconds).

Does automod apply to staff?

Not by default.

Modmail

How do members start a conversation?

They send Kaveh a direct message. Staff can also start one with /modmail open. See Talking to staff.

Can a member have two conversations at once?

No. When one is closed, their next message starts a new one.

Can I stop someone using modmail?

Yes, with /modmail block add. See Modmail.

Can I reply anonymously?

Yes, with /modmail anon or the anonymous option in the dashboard. The member sees "Staff". Your name still appears in the staff channel and the transcript.

Who can read transcripts?

Moderators and higher in that server, after signing in to the dashboard.

Music

What can it play?

YouTube, SoundCloud and several other sources. Spotify and Apple Music links are turned into searches. See Music.

Kaveh joins but plays nothing.

See Troubleshooting. The usual causes are missing voice permissions or YouTube blocking requests for a while.

Does it stay in the voice channel forever?

No. It leaves 2 minutes after everyone else has gone, and 5 minutes after the queue ends.

Chat

Where do my chat messages go?

Kaveh's chat runs on an AI model that the developer hosts, not on a public chat service, so your messages aren't sent to AI companies. They're kept for 30 days so Kaveh can follow the conversation. Clear them any time with /chat clear.

Can it say anything?

Replies pass a safety filter, and Kaveh is a safe-content bot. The filter isn't perfect, so treat Kaveh as a friendly companion, not a moderator.

How do I stop it talking in a channel?

/chat room disable, or pick a different channel on the Chat Room page.

Levels and profiles

How fast do people level up?

By default 15 to 30 XP per message, at most once every 45 seconds, for messages of 5 or more characters. Level 1 takes about five messages and level 10 a couple of hundred. You can change all of this, and levels are off until an admin switches them on. See Levels, XP and badges.

Do level roles replace the previous one?

No, earlier reward roles stay by default. Run /xp reward-mode mode:replace to keep only the highest. See Levels.

What are the global ranks?

A list of members who chose to take part, ranked by a score across servers. It's off until you switch it on, and it's designed so big servers don't dominate. See Your profile.

Can I share my profile?

Yes, if you want to. A public page is off until you switch it on at /me, and you choose which servers it shows. See Your profile, levels and badges.

How do I change my rank card?

With /profile, or on your page at /me. See Your profile, levels and badges.

The dashboard

Why don't I see my server?

You need Manage Server there, and Kaveh has to be in it. If you just added Kaveh, sign out and back in.

I changed something and nothing happened.

Each page saves on its own. Press Save changes and look for "Saved".

Still stuck?

Troubleshooting covers the common problems, What Kaveh doesn't do yet lists what isn't built, and Getting help tells you how to reach the developer.
